FPL Holds Hurricane Drill Simulating Cat 4 Hurricane Benito

They're ready!

That's what the folks at Florida Power and Light are saying ahead of what's expected to be an extremely active hurricane season.

The power giant on Friday is wrapping up its annual hurricane drill, in which Category 4 Hurricane Benito is simulated to hit South Florida.

FPL spokesman Jack Eble says these drills are essential in making sure everyone is ready for when a storm comes.

“We are constantly preparing for the next major storm because we know that all it takes is one storm during hurricane season to impact our customers and our service area."

He tells CBS 12 News that it's a matter of when, not if a storm is going to strike.

FPL's more than 3,000 employees have been going into action, along with technology like drones. FPL's vice president of power delivery, Ed De Varona, says drones are deployed to areas that crews may be unable to reach after a storm.

"We can get the drone technology to give us that bird's eye view of the level of damage that we have in our infrastructure and what crews that we're going to be able to move in."

It's been 19 years since South Florida took a direct hit from a hurricane. That was the category 5 Hurricane Wilma.

Hurricane Season begins June 1st.
